Historic LincolnLincoln 's historic City is dominated on the hill by its Cathedral, one of the finest medieval buildings in Europe , which can be seen on the skyline from miles around. Lincoln 's castle dates back to 1068 and is home to one of four surviving copies of the Magna Carta, sealed by King John in 1215. It is a vivacious City - mixing 2000 years of heritage with excellent shopping and leisure facilities. Historic Bailgate offers the visitor a unique shopping experience, with many fine specialist shops lining its cobbled streets. At the northern end of Bailgate is Newport Arch, the only Roman Arch in England to remain as a traffic thoroughfare. The City centre has a good mix of shops, bars and restaurants, as well as more historical points of interest such as the Guildhall, which houses the City's Civic Insignia, and High Bridge, which is the oldest bridge in Britain to have buildings remaining on it. Immediately adjacent to the City centre is the Brayford Pool, originally dug by the Romans as an inland port, but now the home of Lincoln's expanding University within an area of regeneration that includes accommodation and entertainments.
